The Yancey Fund Awards $92,330 in Grants

(May 2019) – Eleven grants totaling $92,330 were recently awarded to nonprofits by The Yancey Fund, bringing total grantmaking since the Fund’s inception to more than $1.1 million. The Yancey Fund, a CFWNC affiliate fund, was established in 1998 by local residents as a resource for charitable efforts that benefit Yancey County. The Bailey-Hilliard Fund also provided funding for these grants.

The grants include:

Appalachian Therapeutic Riding Center was awarded $7,640 for its school and summer programs.

Carolina Mountains Literary Festival was awarded $5,000 to provide programs at elementary schools and senior citizen centers.

Dig In! Yancey Community Garden was awarded $10,000 for a permanent location for its farm operations.

Parkway Playhouse was awarded $9,500 for a theater program for low-income seniors.

Partners Aligned Toward Health was awarded $10,000 for its free health programs.

Southern Reconciliation Ministries was awarded $10,000 to purchase food for its pantry.

The Strawbridge and Martha Wilson Young Foundation was awarded $7,722 for a field trip program in collaboration with Yancey County schools.

Toe River Aggregation Center Training Organization Regional (TRACTOR) was awarded$9,830 to provide fresh locally-grown produce to the food insecure.

WAMY Community Action was awarded $2,750 to provide $75 garden vouchers to 30 families.

Yancey County Cooperative Extension was awarded $9,888 for an education and opportunity program for parents of young children.

Yancey Hospice and Palliative Care was awarded $10,000 to expand its palliative care program.

“Through the support of friends and neighbors, we are able to fund a wide variety of nonprofits and projects and can continue to meet changing needs over time,” said Advisory Board Chair Ron Powell. “We are very grateful to everyone who has helped to build a permanent charitable resource for Yancey County. We welcome additional gifts to the Fund that will enable us to support even more local programs with local dollars. ”
