The Community Foundation makes grants and works with fundholders to support promising projects across Western North Carolina.

Grants are made to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations and public agencies serving the following 18 counties: Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania and Yancey and including the Qualla Boundary.

Through a careful review process, the Foundation's staff and board work together to award grants that strengthen the nonprofit sector. In simple terms, CFWNC grants are an investment in the future of our region.

Sources of our Grant Funds

As a community foundation, we serve many constituencies and fund a wide range of initiatives, organizations and projects. From July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021, The Community Foundation distributed over $29 million, 82 percent or $24 million of the total was directed by our donors. Generous community-minded citizens are having a tremendous impact through their partnerships with the Foundation.

We actively manage more than 1,200 funds, each created by an individual, family, corporation or nonprofit. The types of funds and the sources of our grantmaking funds at 6/30/2021 are illustrated in this chart.
