The Yancey Fund Awards $90,600 in Grants

(April 2022) – The Yancey Fund awarded twelve grants totaling $90,600 to nonprofits serving Yancey County in its recent grant cycle. CFWNC’s Bailey-Hilliard Fund also provided funding for these grants. The Yancey Fund, in partnership with CFWNC, has awarded grants totaling $1,368,283 million since 1998.

“Yancey County nonprofits undertake important, front-line work in our community and have addressed numerous challenges over the last two years,” said Advisory Board Chair Gregory Stella. “These organizations see a need and work to address it. We are grateful to our donors who have built a permanent charitable resource to support local programs with local dollars.”

The 2022 grants are:

$3,500 to Appalachian Therapeutic Riding Center for a summer camp program for children.

$6,500 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina to support a volunteer mentor recruitment program.

$9,900 to Dig In! Yancey Community Garden to provide training for a seasonal intern and to purchase garden equipment.

$10,000 to Feed-A-Child WNC to complete construction of a food storage facility.

$10,000 to High Country Caregiver Foundation to support grandparents raising their grandchildren.

$10,000 to Pisgah Legal Services for free civil litigation and advocacy for low-income people.

$10,000 to Southern Reconciliation Ministries for technology support and heating assistance to low-income families.

$5,000 to Strawbridge and Martha Wilson Young Foundation to support a fall festival.

$10,000 to Toe River Aggregation Center Training Organization Regional (TRACTOR) to provide fresh, local produce for low-income people.

$9,000 to Tri-County Pregnancy Center to build an awning and a community sitting garden.

$4,000 to Yancey County Humane Society to build fences for low-income people with dogs.

$2,700 to Yancey County NC Cooperative Extension Service/4H Mountain Challenge Club to facilitate a year-long therapeutic horse program for marginalized youth.

In 1998, local residents established The Yancey Fund as a permanent charitable endowment to meet local needs. Gifts added to the Fund’s principal are preserved and invested, while grants from the Fund support nonprofits in Yancey County.
