(May 2018) – Eleven grants totaling $74,000 were recently awarded to nonprofits by The Yancey Fund, bringing total grantmaking since the Endowment's inception to more than $1 million. The Yancey Fund was established in 1998 by local residents as a resource for charitable efforts that benefit Yancey County.
The grants include:
Appalachian Therapeutic Riding Center - $3,060 to increase summer programming for Yancey County children.
Blue Ridge Resource Conservation & Development - $3,500 to design and install educational signs along a section of Mitchell Branch in Ray-Cort Park.
Carolina Mountains Literary Festival - $2,008 to help fund author participation.
Micaville Elementary School - $7,500 to construct a walking trail with fitness stations.
Mitchell-Yancey Habitat for Humanity - $8,000 to develop a long-term program to assist elderly and disabled people so they can remain in their homes.
Partners Aligned Toward Health - $10,000 toward the revitalization of Ray-Cort Park to support the purchase of playground equipment, secure in-kind donations and provide funds to gather community input and collaboration from a diverse group of partners.
Southern Reconciliation Ministries - $10,000 to increase the size of its building to serve more people.
Toe River Aggregation Center Training Organization Regional (TRACTOR) - $10,000 to increase market access for 25 small family farms.
Toe River Health District - $10,000 to integrate a comprehensive professional training program and curriculum to help improve the health of children from low-income families.
Yancey County Humane Society - $2,008 to assist with spay and neuter surgeries for dogs.
Yancey County Child Development Center - $7,924 to develop a garden learning center for students and families to provide more access to affordable and healthy foods.
