The Tri-County Healthcare Education Scholarship - Dr. Helen Wells Award provides scholarship awards to graduating high school seniors from Andrews High School, Hiawassee Dam High School and Robbinsville High School who will attend an accredited college or vocational school to prepare for a profession in the healthcare field.
Awards are given in memory of Dr. Helen Wells, a native of Murphy, NC and graduate of Murphy High School. Dr. Wells later went on to receive her undergraduate degree from the Woman’s College of UNC Greensboro and her medical degree from The Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. Dr. Wells was the first woman doctor in the Western North Carolina area, serving as a general practitioner and hospital physician for 46 years.

Eligibility
Scholarships, renewable for three more years, are available to graduating high school seniors of Andrews High School, Hiawassee Dam High School and Robbinsville High School.
Students must plan to attend an accredited not-for-profit vocational school, college or university to study a healthcare-related field. To maintain the award for subsequent years, the student must continue a focus on healthcare education and must be enrolled full time.
CFWNC ensures that all scholarship recipients are selected on an objective and nondiscriminatory basis and that selections are based on specific guidelines and criteria for each fund.
Selection Criteria
Preference will be given to students demonstrating the following in order of importance:
• Grade point average
• Academic achievement
• Participation in extracurricular activities, community service and/or work experience
• Financial need
• Although it is not required for application, dependents of employees of Murphy Medical Center, Inc., dba Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital, will be given added consideration should they meet the above criteria.
