The Mountain Air Pilots Association (MAPA) was founded to promote aviation safety at the Mountain Air community in Yancey County, and to contribute to the education and welfare of the larger local community.
MAPA holds seminars on flight safety and makes safety improvements to the Mountain Air airport. In addition, the organization is committed to raising funds for charities. A number of the pilots also participate in Angel Flight, an organization that flies patients to get health care, and flies donor organs to places where they are needed.
MAPA award recipients have included the Appalachian Therapeutic Rider Center, Carolina Mountain Literacy Festival, the Mitchell-Yancey Partnership for Children, Mountain Heritage High School Music Program, and the Yancey County Public Library.
With the Cal and Carol Peddy Memorial Scholarship, MAPA seeks to provide scholarship assistance to Mountain Heritage High School graduating seniors wishing to further their education.
