Community Foundation of Western North Carolina

Summertime Kids Grants

The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina offers Summertime Kids (STK) grants of up to $2,000. The objective of this mini-grant program is to provide nonprofit organizations, churches or schools funding so that they may offer recreational and enrichment activities for disadvantaged children who otherwise would not have special summer opportunities.

Deadline

The application deadline for 2010 is March 1.

Eligibility

We welcome grant applications from nonprofit organizations that are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code. Public agencies and churches are also eligible, as long as the proposed program is open to all children who meet the STK guidelines listed below. To be considered for funding, a nonprofit organization must be located in or serving one of these western counties of North Carolina:

Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania and Yancey.

Guideline Specifics

  • Programs funded through Summertime Kids generally serve children who are from low-income families, live in remote areas, have disabilities, or have been neglected or abused.
  • Requests should be for safe, rewarding activities for kids to be offered during Summer 2010 (between June 1 and Aug. 31). All project funds must be used by Aug. 31.
  • Applicants are required to show how they will ensure that funds are targeted to provide activities for children who otherwise would not have such opportunities. (Previous applicants have used enrollment in the public school free lunch program, referrals from social service agencies, and other clearly identified criteria to show how the grant funds will benefit those in need.)
  • Applicants are encouraged to be innovative: create a summer camp experience in an underserved community; initiate a new educational opportunity; visit a special place in Western North Carolina; or expand summer program plans to serve additional children who wouldn't be able to participate without Summertime Kids support.
  • Show us how the project will challenge children's abilities or utilize their imaginations or ingenuity.
  • A project budget must accompany the application listing expenses not to exceed $2,000. Please be specific about how grant dollars would be used. Modest requests that have a big impact are encouraged.
  • Only one application can be submitted per organization.

Additional Information

  • Application for a Summertime Kids project does not have an impact on any other grant request submitted to The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina.
  • Past recipients of Summertime Kids grants are eligible to apply. Projects will not be funded for more than three consecutive years. Reviewers will analyze the previously funded project to help determine whether repeat funding will be approved only if the project evaluation from the previous year has been submitted.
